The aims are to enable candidates to:
Cambridge Checkpoint Science exam is testing years 7 – 9.
The curriculum is dedicated to developing learners who are confident, responsible, innovative and engaged.
These ideas are expanded through the study of areas in biology (plants, humans as organisms, cells and organisms, living things in their environment, variation and classification), chemistry (states of matter, material properties, material changes, the Earth) and physics (forces and motion, energy, the Earth and beyond, sound, light, magnetism, electricity).
There is a greater emphasis on Scientific Enquiry in the Cambridge Checkpoint curriculum. Scientific enquiry objectives underpin Biology, Chemistry and Physics, which are focused on developing confidence and interest in scientific knowledge. Environmental awareness and some history of science are also incorporated. Click for further information on the National Curriculum and Cambridge Checkpoint.
The IGCSE science courses cover two years of study (year10 and year11).
At this level candidates have the opportunity to study biology, chemistry and physics either as individual subjects or as a co-ordinated science programme. Candidates learn about the basic principles of each subject through a mix of theoretical and practical studies, while also developing an understanding of the scientific skills essential for further study.
Candidates learn how science is studied and practised, and become aware that the results of scientific research can have both good and bad effects on individuals, communities and the environment. As well as focusing on the individual sciences, the syllabus enables candidates to better understand the technological world they live in, and take an informed interest in science and scientific developments.
Candidates may follow either the Core curriculum only or the Extended curriculum which involves both the Core and Supplement. Candidates aiming for Grades A*–C should follow the Extended Curriculum. Click for further information on the Cambridge IGCSE.
All three sciences are offered as individual subjects. Candidates may study any of the sciences for one year only (advanced subsidiary) or they can carry on with the second year (advanced level). Click for further information on Cambridge AS/A Level
