Aims

It is the Aim of the Modern Foreign Language Department that all our students will develop:

  • A sound base of skills, language and attitudes required for further study, work and leisure

  • The knowledge and skill needed to cope readily with unfamiliar topics involving more complex language, and recognize attitudes and emotions

  • Necessary skills to communicate in speech and writing, showing knowledge of a range and variety of vocabulary, and applying the grammar and structures of the target language accurately

  • An attainment of high proficiency in the four language skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) according to their capabilities

  • An ability to read independently by choosing stories, articles, books and plays according to their interests, and responding to them

  • An ability to use the language effectively for purposes of practical communication within the country of residence

  • Insights into the culture and civilisation of the countries where the language is spoken

  • Positive attitudes to language learning and a sympathetic approach to other cultures and civilisations

Modern Foreign Languages at IBSB

Key Stage 3

At KS3 we focus on developing the basic skills acquired previously and we develop speaking, listening, reading and writing.

At the end of each unit of work, there are assessment activities targeting each of the mentioned skills.

Towards the end of KS3 (generally Year 9), every student is given a Teacher Assessed National Curriculum Level.

Key Stage 4 (IGCSE)

At the end of KS4 (sometimes earlier for gifted and talented students), our pupils will take IGCSE Cambridge exams.

Key Stage 5 (Advanced Level Exams)

Students who have past their IGCSE exam with an A grade may opt to continue their linguistic studies to AS level. This programme may be completed in one or two years, depending on the abilities of the student.

The AL programme is for students who have finished two years of advanced studies and it is dedicated to the linguistic study of a foreign language and the interpretation of literary texts.
