History

History Department Aims

  • To stimulate interest in and enthusiasm about the past

History at IBSB

Key Stage 3

At key stage 3 pupils study a diverse range of topics below is a table that shows you the main focus points for each year:

At the end of each half term pupils will complete an assessment which will be marked in accordance to QCA levels. Throughout the year pupils are tested on spelling of key words for each unit and meaning of historical terms.

IGCSE History

In IGCSE students will study 20th Century History. They will take 3 exams:

Paper 1 is made up of 2 sections. In section 1 students will answer question on major events in 20th Century history. In section 2 students will answer questions on Germany 1918-1945.

Paper 2 is made up of 1 section. Each year topics are prescribed by the exam board and are taken from the core content of the 20th Century.

Paper 4 is source based and students will have answer question on Germany 1918-1945.

AS Level

At AS level the students study the History of the USA c.1840-1968. The main topics they cover are:

  • Westward Expansion and the Taming of the West c.1840-96
  • Civil War and Reconstruction 1861-77
  • The impact of economic expansion 1865-1917
  • Civil Rights 1895-1968
  • Boom and Bust 1920-1941
  • The USA’s rise as a world power 1890-1945
  • Social Developments 1945-68


The exam consists of 7 essay questions on the above and the students will have to answer 3. They will also have a source-based question on ‘The Road to Secession and Civil War 1846-61’.

A Level

At A level the students study Modern European History 1789-1939. The main topics they cover are:

  • The French Revolution
  • The Industrial Revolution
  • Nationalism
  • The ‘New Imperialism’ 1870-1900
  • The Russian Revolution
  • Totalitarianism between the wars 1919-39
  • A cross- thematic question


The exam consists of 7 essay questions on the above and the students will have to answer 3. They will also have a source-based question on "The origins of the First World War 1870-1914"
