Study Leave Policy

Philosophy and Aims

As part of the UK educational system, Study Leave has been used for many years and is proven to be an extremely effective method in helping students prepare for their exams. We see Study Leave as an essential component of individual and personalized preparation for Cambridge examinations.

One of the main aims of study leave is to prepare students for further education when they will have to learn independently. In training the students in the skill of organizing their time effectively and reviewing their subject materials they will be more prepared for academic success at University.

For Study Leave to be effective, students must be allowed time at home to prepare for examinations, but this is not at the expense of teaching or revision in school. The correct amount of time devoted to Study Leave is therefore crucial and this policy is borne out of a practice that has existed in the British Education System for many years.

Block Study Leave

In IBSB the “Block Study Leave” starts at the beginning of the written examination session in May. It is a 4 week period when students are given parents’ permission to study independently at home. This will be provided for Years 11, 12 and 13 (or for Year 10 candidates who will be sitting at least 2 IGCSE exams) in the summer.

The date of the commencement and completion of the “Block Study Leave” will be decided annually by the school and will take into consideration the timeline of the CIE examination timetable. It is parents’ responsibility to notify the school in writing regarding this procedure. All students not having the written permission will be registered as unauthorised absences.

All teaching staff will continue to work to their normal timetable so students may seek revision assistance from subject teachers when they would normally have that subject.

All students will be provided with a Revision Guide which will explain how to use study leave effectively and provide practical examples so students can utilize their time effectively.

Finally, Study Leave is a privilege and may be rescinded if study in school is deemed to be a more appropriate preparation for individual students.
