Early Years Foundation Stage

Welcome to the Early Years Foundation Stage

In the Pre-school and Reception years the children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.

Every unique child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured. They can establish positive relationships and learn to be strong and independent. At IBSB we recognise that the learning environment plays a key role in supporting and extending a child’s development. We acknowledge that children develop and learn in different ways, and at different rates.  We understand that all areas of learning and development are equally important and inter-connected.

The Pre-School and Reception area is for children between the ages of three and five and prepares your child for Key Stage 1. We encourage them to be independent in their learning in a safe and stimulating environment, which promotes physical, mental and emotional health and well-being.

In our Pre-School and  Reception classes we offer a motivating, caring and well-planned learning environment where children can learn through play, both indoors and outdoors, and in a cross-curricular manner.

The Six Areas of Learning:

The Early Years Curriculum is based on the six areas of learning. Children’s progress in each area is continually assessed so that their development needs are met early.

1. Communication Language and Literacy

Teaching children how to communicate their thoughts and ideas in a variety of ways. Developing an enthusiasm and love of books and teaching them the skills to develop reading. Teaching the children how to form letters correctly and see writing as an important communication tool.

2. Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy

Through a range of activities and experience we develop an interest in numbers. Children develop their skills in counting, reading and ordering numbers. Their mathematical understanding is developed through stories, songs, games and imaginative play.

3. Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We provide experiences that encourage children to be interested and motivated to learn. We develop their understanding that people have different needs, views, cultures and beliefs; and that everyone should be treated with respect.

4. Knowledge and Understanding of the World

Children investigate aspects and materials by using all their senses as appropriate. They find out about and identify some features of living things, objects and events they can see. They observe and identify features in the area they live and the natural world.

5. Creative Development

This area of learning includes Art, Music, Dance, Role Play and imaginative play. All of these will encourage them to respond in a variety of ways to things they see, hear, smell, touch and feel.

6. Physical Development

Children develop their ability to travel around, under, over and through by balancing with control and co-ordination. They are taught to recognise the importance of keeping healthy and how they can contribute to this.
