FIBSB leads the way with Bucharest Stock Exchange links

FIBSB is taking a staring role in developing educational links with the Bucharest Stock Exchange. The school has been working closely with Mariana Ciurel, a member of the Bursa’s of the Research, Development & Strategy team to create programmes and activities for our students which can hopefully used by other schools in the city.
On Wednesday November 15th, a group of 24 students studying IGCSE Economics and Business Studies were the first group of students to officially visit the Bucharest Stock Exchange.

The visit was organised by Mr Simon Parker, the new Head of Business studies at FIBSB, and was intended to provide students with a firsthand glimpse into the way a stock exchange works and what life is like for a person working in this field.
The group, accompanied by Mr Parker and Mr Mulinder, arrived at the stock exchange at 11.30 and was greeted by Miss Mariana Ciurel, who gave the students a 20 minute interactive presentation on the role of the BSE in the Romanian economy, focusing on when the stock exchange started and why, how it works, how individuals can invest in the stock exchange and what factors to take into account when looking for shares to invest in, along with a few insider tips J. Many students took a real interest in the presentation and a few were very keen to invest a portion of their hard-earned savings in a share portfolio. As a result of this trip, the school is now planning to run a portfolio building game in conjunction with the BSE to develop the student’s understanding of capitals markets.

The Bucharest Stock Exchange
Groups of students will have the opportunity to use their skill and judgement to select a winning portfolio with a ‘virtual’ 1000 Euros invested in BSE companies. If the project is successful, it is hoped that other Bucharest Schools will follow the lead of FIBSB and become involved in the BSE in 2007. On January 22nd it was the turn of the year 12 and 13 Business Studies students to receive a special presentation at the BSE which was specifically focused on the finance unit of their AS/A level course. Mr Parker was very impressed that the BSE had tried so hard to accommodate the needs of our students; ”they asked for details of our syllabus and gave the students a very lucid explanation of how stock exchanges support businesses in Romania”.

Click on picture of the Logan for details of our visit

On June 8th IGCSE Business Studies students visited the Renault/Dacia car plant at Mioveni near Pitesti.

The plant produces the famed Logan – a Romanian designed car that is proving to be a world beater. Although it was originally targeted at developing countries, demand for a €8000 new car has been surprisingly high in Western Europe. The UK should see its first (Indian produced) right hand drive Logans later this year.
