Visiting speakers

Dr. John Barker visited our A level Economics group in December to discuss the likely impact of Romania’s EU entry. John works as an agricultural economist for the European Union has been based in Bucharest for over two years. His talk provoked a lively discussion which ranged from the impact of EU membership on neighbouring non-EU countries such as Moldova (the home of one of our students) to the prices of second hand imported cars.

Georges Bergeron is perhaps best known in Romania for turning around the once ailing domestic appliance manufacturer Arctic. His first presentation to our IGCSE Economics group however focused on his previous career as an international banker. Georges, a Canadian national, explained how the banking system in Romania helps create economic growth and new jobs through loans to business and domestic customers. He has back on his home turf for his second visit when students in the IGCSE Business Studies class questioned him on his time at Arctic. Students were impressed and even surprised by his answers: Georges was responsible for increasing the prices of Arctic fridges to improve their brand image!
