Academics

The International British School of Bucharest is a private school for students aged 3-19. The school employs British qualified and international teachers. All instruction is through the medium of English Language. The school follows the National Curriculum of England and Wales, and schemes of work as given out by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. Assessment and record keeping is carried out in line with the practices of the above authorities – including end of key stage Standard Assessment Tests.

IBSB is also an Accredited Cambridge International Centre for Checkpoint, IGCSE and A Level courses.

Both Primary and Secondary school follow the Cambridge international examination programme.

The Cambridge International Primary Programme, typically for 5–11 year olds, gives us a curriculum framework to develop Mathematics, English and Science skills and knowledge in young children. Cambridge Primary provides guidance for curriculum development and classroom teaching and learning. Teachers are able to assess children's learning as they progress with the Cambridge Primary progression tests starting at the age of  6 years old.

Cambridge Lower Secondary Programme is part of the Cambridge Secondary 1 stage. The curriculum provides natural progression from Cambridge Primary and develops children's knowledge and skills in Mathematics, English and Science. It offers a curriculum framework for educational success for learners, typically 11-14 years old, with an optional testing structure. Tests for Cambridge Checkpoint are standardized, set and marked by CIE, so provide an international benchmark of student achievement enabling teachers to advise learners and parents of the suitability of different progression routes.

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is the world's most popular international qualification for 14-16 year olds. It develops successful students, giving them excellent preparation for their next steps in education, including progression to A and AS Level study, and equips them with skills for immediate employment. Cambridge IGCSE is recognised by universities and employers worldwide.

Each learner's performance is benchmarked using eight internationally recognised grades (A*-G). In some countries, IGCSE qualifications will satisfy the entry requirements for university. In others, they are widely used as a preparation for A Level, AS. According to our internal policies, our students have to study eight subjects and sit eight IGCSE exams. Subjects passed at C grade or higher, indicate a student’s readiness to begin higher level work such as A or AS level.

Cambridge International A/AS Levels are internationally benchmarked qualifications providing excellent preparation for university education. They are part of the Cambridge Advanced stage.

Cambridge International AS Levels have half the content of the corresponding Cambridge International A Levels and may be completed in one year. We offer Cambridge International AS Level as a qualification in its own right or as a stage on the way to Cambridge International A Levels. Learners can study Cambridge International AS Level alongside other subjects to increase breadth in the curriculum and build further knowledge and understanding to other subjects they are studying at Cambridge International A Levels.
Each subject that a Cambridge international student takes at AS/A Level receives a separate certificate/grade. The Cambridge International A Levels will be reported on a grade scale from A* grade, awarded for the highest level of achievement, to E, indicating the minimum required performance.
